Round Scad

Round Scad

Round Scad (Decapterus punctatus)

Habitat/distribution: Both sides of the Atlantic. Associated with reefs, down to more than 300 feet.

Method of harvest: Rarely taken as snapper bycatch, and only when quite large.

Season/availability:   No season, but, like all reef/structure jacks and sardines, the round scad is just not usually big enough to be caught with the relatively large hooks used for other snapper fishing.

Size: Up to maybe a half pound

Cooking characteristics: Tasty, like other scads, but almost exclusively used for bait.
